Everyday I hear were in a recession and the job markets at 9.1 percent and the economy is in the verge of collapse? I’ve been abroad for 4 years and all I can pick up is what I can read from articles on the news and internet.

I just read a news article that the Dow Jones Stock market in the U.S. is up to its highest mark. I don’t understand how the U.S. economy seems to be doing so well, yet our standard of living isn’t following. Why are we working more and getting paid less, and on top of that, against higher than average inflation? Why is the minimum wage in Switzerland almost 1.5 times higher than ours (.00)? Why are illegal immigrants allowed to work in the U.S., bringing our average GDP per capita down? I know most Americans see these problems staring them point-blank in the face when they go to work every day or look for a job. But will we do anything about it? I don’t know about you, but I’m a college student and I like bright futures, and this place doesn’t seem like it will cut it for me. I’m thinking, is it time to move out of this $#*@ed up country to Europe?
I mean any European country close to the standard of living of the U.S., say most of Western Europe.

I have a list of pieces that I’ve sold or written under contract and I am currently pursuing publishing and journalism type positions in a very difficult job market (Michigan). I want to make sure I am able to present additional information during an interview.

After college (2003) I made a portfolio type thing in a binder, but it seems to be kind of awkward and employers, while impressed, tended to peruse through it very quickly. They were more interested in a list of where I worked, so I thought about making a list of what I’ve published instead of a portfolio.

Do you have anything like this? Is there any type of industry standard? What would you suggest?

Lastly, what should I do about published article titles that give away things such as political affiliation? I write on politics and Irish-American issues frequently, and from my list you could easily deduce that I am an Irish-American liberal.

Time magazine wrote an article about the economy, and their claim was that it will take decades for our economy / job market to recover. The article said it won’t be like the past recessions, wherein it took only six months or so to bounce back. Is this true? I mean, we were able to recover from the Great Depression in less than a decade, or are there differentiating factors now than before?
